Heat Is the Enemy of Carotenoids: Why Cold-Process Capsules Matter

Not all supplements deliver what is on the label. Here is why.

Carotenoids are powerful but sensitive compounds. Lycopene, astaxanthin, beta-carotene, lutein -- these are the same molecules that give tomatoes, salmon, and marigolds their vivid colors. They are also among the most clinically studied plant compounds for skin support.

But carotenoids degrade when exposed to high heat. This matters because many supplement formats -- particularly gummies -- require heat during manufacturing. The binding agents, gelatin or pectin bases, sweeteners, and flavors that hold a gummy together all need to be heated and molded into shape. That process exposes the active ingredients to temperatures that can break down carotenoid molecules before they ever reach you.

Research on heat degradation of carotenoids shows losses of 30 to 60 percent during thermal processing. That means a gummy listing a certain dose on the label may deliver only half -- or less -- of that amount in its final form.

Cold-process capsules avoid this entirely. Our capsules are manufactured without heat exposure, preserving 100 percent carotenoid integrity from raw ingredient to finished product. What is on our label is what is in the capsule.

Daily photonutrition starts with what actually reaches your skin.
