Across 11 clinical studies reviewed by Ng and colleagues (2021), astaxanthin demonstrated benefits for skin moisture, wrinkle depth, and elasticity. A 16-week placebo-controlled study found that the astaxanthin group maintained moisture and wrinkle depth while the placebo group worsened (Tominaga 2017). For athletes whose skin endures daily environmental stress, this structural support matters.

Reduced collagen degradation is another documented benefit. Rizwan and colleagues (2011) found that lycopene supplementation reduced markers of collagen breakdown following UV exposure. Collagen integrity directly affects how skin ages under sustained sun exposure -- the kind of sustained exposure that defines an outdoor athlete's life.

Does Supplement Format Matter for Active Lifestyles?

Yes. Format matters more than most people realize, and it matters especially for athletes who need reliable dosing.

Cold-process capsules preserve 100% carotenoid integrity because the encapsulation process does not require sustained high temperatures. Gummy supplements, by contrast, degrade 30-60% of carotenoids during heat manufacturing. For a category where tissue accumulation depends on consistent dosing, starting with a format that delivers the labeled amount is foundational.
