Provitamin A vs. Preformed Retinol: The Safety Question Worth Understanding
Not all vitamin A in supplements is the same, and this is a distinction worth knowing.Preformed vitamin A (retinol, retinyl palmitate) is already in its active form when you take it. Your body cannot regulate how much it absorbs, which means high doses can accumulate to potentially problematic levels.
Provitamin A -- specifically beta-carotene, which is what we use in GLOW at 6,000 mcg RAE -- works differently. Your body converts beta-carotene into active vitamin A only as needed. The conversion is self-regulated: when your body has enough, it simply slows down or stops converting. Excess beta-carotene is stored harmlessly or excreted. There is no toxicity risk at normal dietary supplement doses.
This is not a minor formulation detail. It is a deliberate choice we made based on the research. Beta-carotene also serves a dual purpose in our formula -- it functions as both a provitamin A source and a clinically studied carotenoid that accumulates in skin tissue to support your natural antioxidant defenses.
Informed consumers deserve to understand what is in their supplements and why. When evaluating any carotenoid supplement, check whether the vitamin A comes from beta-carotene (provitamin A, self-regulated) or preformed retinol (not self-regulated). The distinction matters.
