When we set out to create GLOW, we didn't start with a supplement and look for research to support it. We started with the research and built backward. Every ingredient, every dose, every ratio in our Daily Photonutrition™ formula is informed by peer-reviewed clinical studies.
Here's the science that shaped our European-inspired approach to internal sun care.
Lycopene: The Foundation Study
The cornerstone of our formulation comes from Dilokthornsakul et al. (2023), published in the Journal of the Philippine Dermatological Society. This randomized controlled trial with 36 subjects showed that lycopene supplementation increased skin's natural UV resilience by 43% over 12 weeks.
But we didn't stop there. Earlier research by Rizwan (2011) demonstrated that lycopene reduced not just UV-induced redness, but also deeper structural damage including collagen degradation and mitochondrial DNA damage. Groten and Grether-Beck (2019) found that lycopene reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNFα in a study of 149 participants.
Astaxanthin: 11 Studies of Consistency
For astaxanthin, we turned to Ng et al. (2021), a systematic review published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements. This comprehensive analysis of 11 clinical studies found that astaxanthin consistently improved skin texture, moisture, and wrinkle appearance across different populations and study designs.
One study particularly caught our attention: Tominaga (2017) followed 65 participants for 16 weeks. While the placebo group's skin condition worsened over time, the astaxanthin groups maintained stable moisture levels and wrinkle depth. This suggested that astaxanthin wasn't just providing temporary benefits — it was supporting the skin's underlying resilience mechanisms.
Beta-Carotene: Meta-Analysis Evidence
Beta-carotene's inclusion is backed by Köpcke & Krutmann's (2008) meta-analysis in Photochemistry and Photobiology. Analyzing 7 clinical studies, they confirmed that beta-carotene builds measurable support that increases with each month of consistent use.
This cumulative effect is key to understanding photonutrition. Unlike supplements that work only while they're in your system, carotenoids like beta-carotene actually accumulate in skin tissue over weeks of consistent use, as confirmed by Aust (2005).
Beyond Individual Ingredients
What makes GLOW unique isn't just the individual studies behind each compound — it's how these clinically studied ingredients work together. Baswan et al. (2021) published research in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine showing that once carotenoids reach meaningful levels in your skin, the support is present across your entire body — continuously and uniformly.
This is the power of Daily Photonutrition versus single-extract supplements. Rather than betting everything on one compound, we've created a synergistic formula where each ingredient supports and amplifies the others.
Manufacturing Matters Too
Our research extended beyond active ingredients to manufacturing processes. Studies in Food Chemistry showed that heat processing can degrade carotenoid integrity. That's why we use cold-process capsules that preserve 100% carotenoid potency — ensuring that the compounds reaching your skin match the doses used in clinical research.
We also included 800mg of Solnato™ annatto-derived tocotrienols, which comparative studies show outperform conventional Vitamin E in sustaining antioxidant activity where traditional forms fall short.
The Research Continues
These 13 peer-reviewed studies represent our foundation, but photonutrition research is expanding rapidly. As we continue to build this category, we're committed to transparency about both our formulation rationale and the evolving science behind internal sun care.
Your SPF protects the outside. We support the inside — and now you know exactly which studies inform that support.
